EcoHealth 4th Biennial Conference
Mark your calendars! The next EcoHealth Biennial Conference is scheduled to take place on October 15-18, 2012 in Kunming, China. The Student Section is cooking up some exciting and innovative side events. Go to http://www.ecohealth2012.org/ for more information.
Previous Student Section Activities have included:
EcoHealth 3rd Biennial Conference - August 18-20, 2010
The 3rd Biennial EcoHealth conference was held at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
EcoHealth Student Section Workshop & Retreat, Bozeman, Montana, August 19-21, 2009
Participants greatly appreciated the high quality powerpoints and informal time that followed each scientific presentation, the flexibility of a self-setting agenda, and the accessibility of outdoor activities. The range of presenter backgrounds provided insights into navigating the job market, attributes of academic, government and non-profit employment, and the latest disease ecology research. Students felt the retreat offered an extended and relaxed setting different than the rushed and busy nature of standard conferences or the anonymous cold email introduction. The relaxed setting allowed the students to have the full attention of the speakers, without the common distractions and busyness at a larger conference. As well, the setting established networking between research groups and provided students with referrals to other scientists and research.
Guest mentors and workshop participants:
Dr. Scott Carver, disease ecologist now working with Hanta Virus, and previously on Ross River Virus in Australia
Dr. Paul Cross, USGS disease ecologist working on chronic diseases such as brucellosis and CWD and previously TB in African buffalo
Dr. Vanessa Ezenwa, University Montana in Missoula, a disease ecologist working on macroparasites, immune interactions and WNV
Dr. Gary Tabor, Funding Executive Director of the Center for Conservation Medicine, current Executive Director of The Center for Large Landscape Conservation
Dr. Raina Plowright, Smith Fellow with prior work on Hendra virus in flying foxes
Student testimonials:
"I came (read: drove 12 hours), I saw (spectacular views up on Bozeman's peaks), and I (didn't quite) conquered (but, I did listen to some damned good research and had great, insightful conversations on academia over delicious food)... All in all, a memorable, relaxing, rewarding, and--dare I say it for a retreat?-- productive good time!"
"The mountains alone are hard to top, but add some EcoHealth students, toss in fabulous research mentors, stir with ideas and sunshine, and top with fresh wild huckleberries for one amazing scientific mountain (re)treat."

Student Section Journal and Book Club
EcoHealth students from around the globe have connected via Skype to discuss selected books and articles. By discussing these texts students have been able to share insight from our varied backgrounds and disciplines, and connect with one another as professionals and friends.

Student Section Meeting in Merida, Mexico, December 2008
The Ecohealth Student Section had a wonderfully successful meeting at the International EcoHealth Forum 2008 in Mérida, Mexico in December 2008. Highlights of the Student Section meeting included the introduction of new student section coordinators, an overview of the Memorandum of Understanding, and a collaborative brainstorming session. The meeting was followed by a lively party where Ecohealth students were able to meet, network and socialize. (Photos: S Olson, M Berbes)
EcoHealth Students at COHAB 2, Galway, Ireland, February 2008
Kosta Tzoulas, who represented the Student Section at the COHAB 2: Conference on Health & Biodiversity, 25-28 February 2008, in Galway, Ireland, wrote up an overall summary report and a separate report on the side event entitled "Biodiversity, Development and Health in Higher Education: Current Provision and Future Potential". The draft COHAB overall report and the draft side event report are now available.
Indigenous News Flash
Jonathon 'Yotti' Kingsley with help from Coll Hutchinson, created an inspiring collection of news flashes which focused on issues of Indigenous health and the environment. By highlighting current research, pointing out valuable resources, and writing their own commentary, these two invigorated EcoHealth Student Section collaborations. Check out some of the archived news flashes!
